Natural Sisters Cafe - Joshua Tree

January 18, 2011 by India Leigh

Being obsessed as I am…with good vegan tucker, a favourite pass time and necessary tool for my craft..of discovering and eating aforementioned sustenance, is Googling tasty words like…VEGAN…DOSA…REUBEN…TAMALE….(focus! focus!)  On a road trip, the prospect of treasure is exhilarating.  Where will X mark the spot?  At Natural Sisters Cafe????

A fifty-mile detour…each way, from my trajectory would of course mean that I fully wanted to LOVE the place.  I’d read a YeLP.com review about ‘biscuits and gravy’.  I’m English and have no idea what this crazy entree is so of course I want a piece of the action.

I arrive at this simple, clean, bright and welcoming cafe.  It feels comfy.  The candles and fresh flowers give the place a teeny tiny sense of occasion.  The waitress was super sweet, helpful and obviously proud to be working there.  Oh I’m excited!  I order the B&G even though it was way past breakfast, they agreed to whip me up a plate.  The Indian spiced soup makes my mouth flood so I order a small cup too.

To my horror (ok more..disappointment) I find the biscuits and gravy are not vegan.  The biscuits are what in Blighty we call scones and the ‘gravy’ is thick sauce…a whole damn plate of it!  My mouth drooped involuntarily.  I just had to try the ‘gravy’, what was all the fuss about?!  I sampled a tiny quarter spoon.  Blurgh!….  The biscuits were sweet!?  I do not understand this dish.  I mark this one off the score card.

The soup, delivered in a clear glass cup was thick, perfectly spiced and seasoned and was very moreish.

Desperate to claw back the drumroll expectations of the extended road trip, I ordered the chop salad, a local ‘favourite’.  Oh dear. The sundried tomatoes were not soaked, the tahini dressing was sour.  ‘Off’ sour.  It was unremarkable.

I feel sad when I eat ‘average food’.  I loathe writing poor reviews.  10 out of 10 for customer service, appearance of venue and for a heartwarming dahl, is the best I can say.  Maybe the sandwiches would of been a better bet?  Hopefully the cafe was having an ‘off day’.

Happy hour at Vegan House

December 31, 2010 by India Leigh

The Vegan House in Silverlake is not swanky, its lit sign doesn’t pull you in with a designer typeface, the painted $4.99 lunch special daubed on the glass door does little to install confidence (in me) that a special dining experience awaits.   I passed it by often as I trudged up and down Silverlake Blvd to Echo Park, and my daily writing spot at Stories bookshop and cafe.  I seemed to have forgotten that some of my most amazing meals have been purchased, road-side for mere pocket change in some exotic destination.

This day I wanted veggies, lots of them, colourful, fresh and I wanted them bad.  It was early evening as I passed by, noticed the bargain ‘happy hour’ sign.  The staff were welcoming.  The decor, as the exterior…no frills.  Think canteen style.  There were 3 choices for the $4.99 deal, for starter, entree and dessert.  ALL VEGAN.  I opted for the spicy eggplant with black bean sauce.  It came in no time, fresh, hot and coupled with a mound of steamed brown rice.  The veggies were delicious and the rice had a pleasing chew.  The sauce was delicious.  I sampled the ‘crab’ wantons too.  A creamy soy filling in crisp, fried pastry, served with chilli jam.  Yes, yes, yes….yum, yum, yum!  A healthy and delicious feast for under $10.

I returned twice.  The staff always super nice.  The great taste consistent.  If you want a cheap and flavoursome meal and don’t mind omitting the fancy dancy frills then go pull up a chair.  They do Mexican dishes too.

Back in LA…let the food party commence!

December 19, 2010 by India Leigh

How do I cope with torrential rain, delayed departures and touching down in a new city?…..I go get me some food. Good food.  I dropped in my bags, grabbed the key to my new rental and headed out.  First stop….Flore, a vegan haven, situated, bang smack, a little off centre, of the hip hang-out, Sunset Junction, Silverlake.  I’d practically ran there to fill up my empty belly.  No puddle could dissuade me, no overflowing pot hole could dampen my ardour.  I was set on a course like an missile, a bullet, a…..ok, sorry… the FOOD.

I ordered the Reuben, partly because the waiter recommended it and partly because I’d seen a review for the Radical Reuban from the Chicago Diner on http://www.portlandveganreubans.blogspot.com/ and I had salivated upon seeing the images on the web, even though I couldn’t imagine what it tasted like. For those who have not had the good fortune to try it, it’s Tempeh, sauerkraut and cashew cheese inside toasted spelt bread.  It came out in super quick time, though this may have been because the rain stopped all but the hardy from venturing out to feast.  The toast was warm and buttery and the guts of the sandwich was a heady mix of creamy, crunchy, sweet and sourness and it was DELIGHTFUL.  It was subtle.  More contented ‘Sunday morning easy’ type of a vibe than a ‘crash..bang..whallop, street party’ kind of a sandwich.  Any gripes I hear you question?… I wished they’d been more generous with the salad (3 slices of cucumber, some alfa sprouts and a few leaves).  It seemed a bit pricey for a sandwich too, but maybe I’m just being tight from the downturn in the exchange rate of my quids and dollars?

The decor is a bit like they can’t be bothered and leave it all to the food to do the talking, which is fair enough but I do think the display counters seem to dominate the room and they are not even that pretty….needs a womans touch!  The ambiance wasn’t setting off any fireworks for fun and bonhomie either but it did the job and reached the spot, as they say.

I sampled the wheat-free apple and cinnamon cupcake which sat looking at me alluringly all throughout dinner.  The sponge was moist, not too sweet and the icing was ok, I’d prefer more of a frosting but…hmm, I’d give it 2.5 out of 5 as far as cupcakes go.  I polished off though and left my plate with a mere smear, not even a crumb…just a smear.  I’d eat at Flore again, but not before I’ve crossed out the places on my long and lovely list!  If you have any ‘must try’ vegan Meccas let me know please.

With my tummy pleasantly full and an added bounce to my step, I trudged back through the rivers of water running off from the Silverlake hills, and back to my room. I thanked God for inventing taste buds and called it a night.

postscript…I was so hungry, that in my rush to get fed I didn’t take my camera to Flore, so I borrowed the snaps of the food from Google.  My thanks to those who took the pics. x
