Vegan In Los Angeles

I’ve been spending a lot of time in Los Angeles. After spending a number of years being ever so slightly obsessed with San Francisco, it has made a nice change. I’d forgotten how much I loved Silverlake and this time I also discovered the delights of the vegan friendly neighbourhoods of Eagle Rock & Highland Park. These small walkable shopping streets are a mix of mom & pop Latino stores and artisanal food and art boutiques. The border of Eagle Rock spills down to Highland Park where one can eat vegan gluten free pizza, vegan and gluten free (make your own!!) donuts, vegan taco food truck, ‘bowls’ and tempeh reubens, and acai bowls and juices!

If I had had a car (a girl can only get so far in LA traffic on a rickety bike) and an excess of cash..I would have gone on an eating spree. I had wanted to visit Crossroads, M.A.K.E, Shojin and Au Lac for sure. They are a $$$ though and too far from where I was staying, so they (for now) remain unchecked off my list of places to eat.

The list below is of the restaurants and deli’s that I did visit AND where I remembered to take a photo. You find on a previous post the hedonistic delights of Donut Friend, home of vegan donuts - they’re GLUTEN FREE!

Hands down my first and most enduring love in terms of vegan food, in LA was Organix. A family owned vegan deli and food store in a strip mall on Colorado Boulevard. You know you have been somewhere a lot when you and the owner and life long resident of Eagle Rock, Andrew Perez are on first name terms. I ate the same thing every time. It was consistently good. VERY good. So good I was scared it may not hit the spot each time I ordered. Oh, but it did. They are truly making magic in their allergy friendly deli. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. The leading photo on this post is of the much loved puerco - vegan pulled pork sandwich on fabulous gluten free bread. $10 for a loaded sandwich. Worth EVERY cent!

Interesting things are afoot in Downtown LA since I last visited 6 or so years ago. The place is getting much more fancy and vegan eateries are sprouting up all over. Cafe Gratitude (a place I oft frequented in SF before they closed that particular location), Au Lac, Localita & The Baddasserie, Tiera Cafe and Shojin to name just a few. A newly opened hub in the Arts District DTLA is THE SPRINGS. It’s an organic juice bar, yoga studio, wellness center, raw vegan restaurant & wine bar, and an online eco-vegan, mind-body, one stop shop. The food was good (my friend enjoyed his dish more than I did mine), a good selection of healthy, some raw and mostly vegan dishes (be aware that some dishes include honey, which is not vegan). Mostly gluten free too. The atmosphere is chilled, the staff friendly and the prices reasonable for it’s location and style.

SunCafe, a garden oasis located just off the 101 freeway in Studio City. I was expecting great things of this vegan restaurant. The reviews on Happy Cow were many and mostly glowing. They have an extensive menu - soups, sliders, sandwiches, Mac & Cheese and a selection of raw entrees. Choosing what to have was not easy. When I visited I was feeling a bit gastronomically virtuous so I opted for a salad and not my usual choice of something wedged between two slices of gluten free bread. The Raw Kale Colossus – massaged kale, SunChorizo (sadly omitted as not gluten free), mushrooms, bell peppers, pico de gallo, raisins & bananas, looked promising so I ordered that with a side of pickled beets. My dining partner ordered the Portobello Sandwich on gluten free ciabatta. We both wanted the mash & gravy side to share.

The food arrived fairly quickly. Whilst we waiting (stomach’s rumbling. Or maybe that was just me?!) it gave us time to get a feel for the place and have a look around. There is a large outdoor seating area under green arbours with an intimate feel. The staff were very efficient though not overly friendly. The clientele were not of the hipster persuasion, of the like seen in Silverlake/Echo Park and seemed more of the office-y and healthy eating tribe (though that is all conjecture).

Aside from finding the short row of four slices of banana laying on top of entree a bit odd, my salad was generous and tasty. The mash and gravy was good (but not as good as mine…Yes, I will blow my own trumpet!). The portobello sandwich was stacked and good.

The prices were in line with other establishments of similar ilk in LA.

rahella lassens

So what to turn to when your budget is squeezed and you go take-out? Lassens. A small chain of health food stores in LA and Ventura County. They were my local (as well as Trader Joes of course!) whilst I was in Silverlake. They have a hot and cold deli and salad bar, and in store pre-prepared food. The Raw Collard Green & Mango Wrap was cheap and heavenly. The wrap was stuffed with a rich and filling tomato/walnut ‘meat’ and the avocado/cilantro/orange sauce was sensational. I could have easily drunk it as a smoothie! Yum and under $5!

Another favourite food grab was a yellow split pea Ethiopian Wrap (100% teff injera) from Rahel Vegan Cuisine. They sell in other locations in LA too. These were a bit more spendy..(but very filling). I think the wraps are about $7.

I will be returning to LA in May…..Jumping up and down!…. I will update you as soon as I sample more of the vegan and gluten free eats on offer in the city.

Vegan Donuts Los Angeles

IMG_1269

Vegan donuts Los Angeles.

Donut Friend two words in the English language that are good, whether alone or together. Donuts are great. Friends are great. Put together? Well, after eating a pillow of doughy, adorned heaven at Donut Friend, for a moment the world drops away to reveal a glorious illumined alter of the baked bonne bouche. Really, you say..is it that good?! Ok so vegan baked donuts that taste like they are fried with GLUTEN FREE options that you can either dress up with one of their crazy good on-menu (sweet and savoury) flavours, or, OR make up from your own limitless crazy imaginations. Yes, DIY. They slice the donuts in half and that creates a lidded platform for you to fill, stuff and cram as you see fit. THEN, yes then you get to have it drizzled, dipped, sprinkled and literally drowned in more sensational toppings.

I went straight for the DIY option, with a gluten free donut. After much deliberation I opted for the raspberry habanero jam and coconut cream filling. Chocolate and vanilla glaze. Gloriously topped off with coconut bacon. My fingers were restless as I watched them create my masterpiece. I was eager to get my hands on it. Did my friends look at me strangely to see the over-the-top pure excitement I was displaying for a donut?! No matter. It was worth getting excited about! Picking it up it was dripping in glaze, I bit into it and waited for the flavours to tinkle my tastebuds like a piano player on the ivories! It was insanely good! The jam packed an intense sweet heat, the coconut bacon was crisp and smokey and the flavours played together like a symphony! The donut was baked but it tasted every bit fried. It was so delicious!!

I had to quell the oink within to hold back from trying all the flavours that were teasing mercilessly behind the glass! Friend J had the blueberry loaded ‘Husker Blu’, Friend C had the ‘Angry Samoan’, a chocolate and coconut adorned creation. C said he could not tell the difference between the gluten and the non-gluten donuts. They both admitted my DIY donut was totally delicious. I took another friend a day or so later and they said that they’d never know it was vegan and it was the best donut they’d had. It definitely was mine too!

Feast your peepers on the menu - I dare you not to salivate with creations like; caramelised apple, with vegan cheese, caramel and toasted peanuts, strawberry shortcake, pastry cream & chocolate, the S’Morrissey with a chocolate cake donut filled with toasted marshmallows and topped with chocolate glaze and graham cracker crumbs!!!!

As if you’d care with all that amazing ‘can you even believe it’ ‘have I died and gone to heaven’ ?going on but the prices are good, the donut shop is located in a fun, cozy part of town and the staff are squeezably nice too! It is not an all vegan place but it is mostly. Which you can tell by the fact they * the non-vegan items!

If all that is not enough, Donut Friend are also in Highland Park, a fun, hip and friendly area of town which I have fallen madly in love with. I will be going back again. And again, and again…and again. Nothing wrong with having donuts for lunch!

Sage Organic Vegan Bistro – The Return

YES! Dessert first!

I sprinted back to Sage Organic Bistro as soon as the seat belt sign went off.  Well, nearly.
Was it as good?   YES.
Were staff still attentive and fun? YES.
Did I eat too much again? YES.
Did I care?…ooh… NO!

is the photography a bit poor?…sorry, yes.

succotash (for those that don’t know what this is…I didn’t..do now.  It is a mix of lima beans and corn) fritters with pink zimichi cabbage

Mushroom dinner - Portabello with red wine and onion gravy.  Mashed potatoes.

I couldn’t stop myself from ordering what I’d had before..the pull was too strong.  Southwestern Burger - Walnut & mushroom - unburgered (to make it gluten free) and taco’d.  Dill & baby leaf salad (smiling)

The dessert was HUGE.  AND I didn’t share it.  After sampling a million vegan ice cream flavours they had in their creamery..I opted for the BabyCakes NYC cookies and raisin and the Vacation - super foods medley with EVERYTHING that was ever good in it.  Cacao.  AND with a raw brownie.  AND a sprinkle of BabyCakes NY cookie. AWESOME. Creamy, crunchy with ramped up chocolate flavour and sweet and spiced crumbliness.

Sage Organic Vegan Bistro - Part 2

Sage Organic Vegan Bistro – Part 2

It was my last day in LA (for now), before flying to the UK and I’m looking at SAGE’S website over and over, hoping for a miracle that I’d read it wrongly and the actually were serving brunch every day…..sadly, my efforts to telepathically alter their reality was a flop and it is only a weekend treat….hey, ho, all the more reason to rev up Air New Zealand to fly my ass back over to the States A.S.A.P!  It was a Wednesday so my last meal in Cali for a while was to be lunch.

Noon, and I was practically helping them to open up I was so on time and EAGER as an eager thing.  Stan had returned with me too.  His enthusiasm for the food as great as mine…(or perhaps it was the lure of more gorgeous staff for him to tease!).  Stan wasted not a nano second when the waiter arrived and demanded that wontons be bought to our table with the swiftness of a forward breeze in a wind tunnel.  The flavour of the crispy, hot little critters, from only 16 hours before, still lingered on my tongue.  Damn, I was excited.

Jalapeno Wontons to start…

Stan, proudly brandishing a kick ass jalapeno wonton.  I had to refrain from snatching it from his grasp and stuffing it in my boca!
Revisit my post from yesterday to read about these puppies….Jalapeno wontons….want tons!
After casting an eye over the menu, my eating partner decided, in double quick tempo, to give the Tacos a go.  In an attempt to be as easy going and laid back as him (in regards to food selection) I managed to decide the fate of my tastebuds in a record time (pour moi) of only ten minutes!
Stan’s tacos were reportedly v.good. He raved about the slaw.  ‘best ever’, now there is a declaration for a man whose been around the block once or twice! I took a cheeky sample of the taco ‘meat’, fashioned from Jackfruit (taste, texture reminiscent of artichokes).  I do declare I bloody love vegans.  They are ALL given gold stars and sent to the top of the class for inventiveness.  OUTSIDE OF THE BOX, baby!

I was to covet and demolish the soul bowl.  What a fascinating journey that plate was!  I pulled up along side the deep fried Mac n Cheez and let the engine idle….gooey, cheezy, chewy, salted to perfection..HA HA!  Deep fried okra..eiuww, ladies fingers are usually the subject of a detour for me, slime not being at the top of my mouthfeel greats, but, dear reader…they were delicately crunchy and earthy.  CONVERT!  Those yellow fingerlings in the pics are deep fried babino corn.  GENIUS.  YUM.  The roasted sweet potato was candied goodness and married perfectly with the garlicky polenta that I stabbed as a duo on my silver wear.  I must admit, yesterday’s Jamaican Jerk Burger takes some (a lot..can’t be done..) beating but the Soul Bowl was utterly delish, a riot of flavour (and colour).

I took no prisoners and ate the bloomin lot.  Threw down my napkin as a gesture of me being spent, done, satiated.  My soul fed and watered.  Purse a tiny bit lighter.  My smile broader.  I delivered a million thanks to the food God, and the smashing staff, and bowed out of this US adventure, a bunny of much happiness.    ‘Say it with me Arni…’, hasta la vista, sugar!   kisses to Sage.

Sage Organic Vegan Bistro - Part 1

Sage Organic Vegan Bistro – Part 1

So, finally, I’m unpacked.  Back in my own kitchen.  Coveting my Magimix, stroking my spiralizer, polishing my pans and gazing lovingly at my hand blender.  As soon as the jetlag wears off, and I can stay awake long enough to broil, bake, stir fry, chop, dice and read a few steamy cook books…. I’ll be back in the game.  Meanwhile, as promised, I want to talk Sage.

I’d planned two days stay in Silverlake, my favourite neighbourhood of LA, on my way out of LAX. I had two places to visit….. SAGE ORGANIC VEGAN BISTRO and NATURE MART bulk bin in Los Feliz (apparently owned by one and the same).  I wanted to stock up on American goodies to stash at my house in the UK…..an attempt to appease my pining for California and stuff myself silly with good vegan fayre for the journey home… just because I could.

My friend Stan, more colourful than a paint catalogue, and I hot footed it down to super hip and trendy ECHO PARK and arrived just as they were opening at 5pm (I was too impatient to wait any longer).  I have to say the staff were exceptionally attentive, sweet and fun.  Stan is an unrestrained flirt and he got to work on the staff, simultaneously shocking and charming them…meanwhile,  I was floating in my own little piece of heaven, deliciously agonizing over the menu.
I asked the waitress’s advice and she suggested buffalo croquettes or jalapeno and  DAIYA CHEEZ wontons to start.  We ordered both.  Stan decided on the falafel bowl entree and I plumped for the Jamaican jerk burger.  The restaurant was light, bright and airy, good for people watching (if you are able to take your eyes off the food and menu… unlike me).  The place was full of the most amazing smells and I was wriggling in my chair in anticipation.  Just as well Stan was conducting a dazzling performance teasing the staff, to avert my attention, or I may have gone a little bit doolaly with hunger.
The chefs knocked up the food super quick; the wontons and croquettes arrived, looking ‘prom night’ gorgeous, and I was ready to plunge right in.  The wontons were perfectly crisp, the cheez was deliciously tangy and rich, the jalapeno delivered a playful kick.  They were so damn tasty, the horseradish dip with fennel tops added a fun layer of flavour.  The heat made our noses tingle.  Wooohoo!  Fabulous.  Food to make you giggle.

The buffalo croquettes were so good too.  Interesting…akin to a falafel with a luscious buffalo sauce and a sour ‘cream’.  At this point my face was a picture, I looked like I’d won the Lotto…

Once Stan had restrained me from licking the plate, I finally released my grip and let the waitress take our empty dishes back to the kitchen.  In no time the mains were hot footing it over to our table.  What followed, for me, was a food equivalent to a religious experience.  Jesus…the Jamaican Jerk burger was, in Stan’s words, ‘TO LIVE FOR’!

Like an eye popping country scene or the vast expanse of the grand canyon, I just couldn’t get the photo’s to do it justice.  Believe me…this is the BEST burger I’ve tasted.  Black bean and walnut patty, jerked portobella mushrooms and on top luscious caramelized onions and leeks.  Cavorting alongside was a glamorous mango saffron aoli. The burger was so flavoursome, so rich….the texture….I’m lost for words.  Some people weep with joy at the sight of a Venus de Milo, or when they hear the orchestra play Bach, or watch a ballet..me, I could of wept with joy at the taste, the unami of this entree. BRAVO, BRAVO! The kale and potato chips were icing on the cake..so to speak.  I didn’t even want to sully my mouth with any other flavours, so refused Stan’s offer to try his falafel bowl.  He did report that the flavours were good, especially the red pepper hummus, but the falafel a little dry.  He did tell our waiter so perhaps this may have been addressed.
For dessert I couldn’t resist the ice cream.  All vegan, made by KINDKREME.  Once I’d had a tiny sample of all of them I decided to have a scoop of the one with oats and raisins in (can’t quite remember the name), made glossy and delectable with a drizzle of raw salted caramel topping.  Lovely. Lovely, lovely!
I LOVE SAGE ORGANIC VEGAN BISTRO SO MUCH I WANT TO MARRY IT!  Before we’d even got out the door to head home I’d decided to return the next day…..  .  Watch out for Sage Vegan Part Deux!

Native Foods - Palm Desert

Native Foods – Palm Desert

Hot off the plane from San Francisco, a friend and I decided to detour to Native Foods in Palm Desert, to quell my withdrawal symptoms from staying in the belly button of foodie heaven which is SF.

I’d been to the NATIVE FOODS CAFE in Palm Springs a few weeks ago, so it was a good time to see how it’s being done at another watering hole of theirs.

I’ll be honest, I’d already eaten a bag of Rhythm kale chips on the plane, a Trader Joes seaweed snack pack, a Bunny Bar (obviously by name only!) and a plum sweetened vegan cookie so stomach was not exactly screaming for attention, but…in the name of research, I plucked a starter from the menu and sat soaking in the warm dry air and ‘food watching’, much the same as people watching but far more interesting, waiting for our food to arrive.

I’d wanted to have the tempeh reuben, but thought I should try something different, be adventurous, try and keep you amused.  A gold star beside the sweet potato taquitos signalled it was a new addition.  Coconut mashed sweet potato, with a flash of chipotle crema and a serving of guacamole.  The taquitos managed, despite being fried, to not appear overly oily and had a satisfying crunch.  Sweet, tangy, creamy, crisp and with a crafty kick.  Nice!

My friend Kirk is on a ‘no grainer’, so he opted for the Spring Kale Salad; Raw kale, cabbage, apples and hass avocados, almonds and currants, with a maple orange dressing and a drizzle of tahini.  It speaks for itself and he’d have licked the bowl if no one had been watching!
The waitress kindly let me sample their homemade tempeh.  ‘Twas a tasty bite.  I get the impression, from ogling the other diner’s entrees and the sail like brandishing of their signature tempeh, that Chef Tanya is mightily proud!

Now I’ll just have to concoct a plan to get back down the mountain I’m staying on to try all the other menu options that tickled my tastebuds…thinking caps on.

Interview with Deborah Stern, the founder of La Guera Tamalera in Los Angeles

March 28, 2011 by India Leigh

Interview with Deborah Stern, the founder of La Guera Tamalera in Los Angeles

I’m nothing if not consistent..true to form, I am obsessive about vegan food.   Confession….my current obsession is TAMALES.  I am spending my time in the kitchen experimenting with recipes, going square eyed watching vignettes on YouTube of tamales being rolled.  They are mostly body shots or shots of nimble hands forking masa onto yellow corn husks (a bit like Tom & Jerry, where you only ever see the humans from the neck down!)….and it’s all Deborah from La Guera Tamaleras fault!

Had I not had the pleasure of tasting her bloody perfect sasquash tamales I wouldn’t of got HOOKED!   She set the bar pretty God damn high for me to  reach….if I could EVER to try and recreate her objects of steaming perfection,  to ensure I am never long without them.  I knew about La Guera from the About Us page on her website.  Her inventive fillngs, her top quality ingredients, where she delivers and even a cute picture of her as wee lass.  But my mind chattered with questions, my taste buds sent me flavoured memories….

After reading every sweet syntax and drooled over every picture on her website…..

Read about how The White Girl Tamale Makers beginnings here…

..I was still filled with questions..wanting to keep the contact with the Queen of tamale land.  So I BEGGED her to let me do an interview with her for my blog.   She agreed.  Yey!

How did you feel about starting a business within such a small niche?

I suppose I didn’t really think about it from the standpoint of it being a small niche. It just seemed like the thing to do at the time. Looking back, I suppose it would have been more circumspect to approach things from a what-can-I-do-to-make-money angle instead of a hey-this-could-be-fun perspective, but I think it’s important to own a good set of rose-colored glasses when you start any new venture. Really, just seeing how many tamales the family who trained me were making and selling made succeeding seem possible. Good thing I don’t have a burning desire to be rich and famous; I’m happy when I can just pay my bills and chill.

I was totally absorbed when you were sharing with me how you are just following the openings for your business as they come (like the guerrella delivery).
Ahem, that’s Guer-rilla Delivery, (a combo of Guera + Guerrilla) and yeah, I think you have to remain flexible in life, probably even more so in business. Keep your eyes open to opportunities, and don’t be afraid to be creative and explore uncharted territory. Everyone’s so quick to tell you what to do, but really, you’re the one who’s going to know what’s best for you, what your access to capital is, what your personal bandwidth is. Cautiously following my instincts has always worked for me.

Here’s a link to Guer-rilla Delivery Info and FAQ    DELIVER ME MASA HEAVEN!

My website is about vegan food, though I know you supply carne also.  I’m happy to report to everyone that you pride yourself in preparing vegan tamales to ensure no cross contamination.  You herald the use of organic & non-gmo ingredients.  Can you offer a few thoughts about the healthy slant on the tamales you developed.
Well, back when starting this business was just a glimmer in my eye, I did a little internet search for “tamales Los Angeles.” What I found was that you pretty much can’t throw a rock in this town without hitting a tamaleria. If I wanted to go forward, I knew I had to set myself apart somehow. The first thing I did was to experiment with taking out the lard. (After a week or two in Mexico, I always felt like someone had just wrung out my intestines. The family I stay with uses lard in EVERYTHING, from tamales to pozole. Don’t get me wrong, it’s delicious, just a little on the harsh side for this delicate flower.) From there, it was only natural, so to speak, for me to use organic ingredients, since that’s my personal preference anyway. I figured I would just make something that I would love to eat, see if other people agree, and then go from there. It didn’t take long for the vegans to find me; you guys are on it! That’s why I added an additional vegan flavor (Sesame Kale) to join the already popular Spinach & Shiitake Mushroom. The sweet tamales don’t have animal products in them, either.

When are your favourite tamale eating moments?
I don’t know if I have a general favorite tamale-eating time of day, if that’s what you mean, but I will tell you about two singular experiences that stand out in my mind. The first was when I perfected my recipe for Strawberry Tamales. I was alone, and I think it was my third pass at the recipe. I pulled the sample from the steamer, gave it a few minutes to cool, and peeled the husk back in anticipation. I will tell you that it smelled amazing. When I took my first bite, I felt a warm buzz flow through my body and my eyes rolled back into my head. Sounds like hyperbole, I know, but it’s really true. I remember saying aloud: Now I can die happy.

The second tamale experience I’ll tell you about is very similar. I’d been working on a special vegan recipe for my upcoming tamalada (tamale-making party), and I just couldn’t seem to get it quite right. Finally, after what seemed like countless tries, I came up with a vegan version of our popular Blue Corn Jalapeño & Cheese, using blue corn non-GMO masa, fresh organic jalapeños, and vegan Daiya ‘cheese.’ Seriously, that warm buzz and eye-rolling thing happened again…guess that’s the benchmark of bliss…that or a precursor to a seizure. Either way, I can’t wait to teach this killer recipe next month at the Cottage on the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl.  FingerS crossed I can make it to the party, even if I have to walk all the way there on my knees!

Thanks Deborah!  The Queen of the Tamale!

Native Foods Cafe in Palm Springs

March 17, 2011 by India Leigh

Native Foods Cafe in Palm Springs

After 3 weeks atop a mountain with not a decent vegan restaurant in sight (not even with binoculars!) I nearly bit a friends hand off when she suggested I borrow her car and make an escape.

I’d love to say I then went online to research vegan restaurants located off The Hill (as the locals sentimentally call it), but one of my guilty pleasures is just looking at restaurant menus online (is that weird??), I had already in mind where I wanted to eat so I knew where I was headed.

Good ‘ole Google supplied me with a map and off I went, singing all the way.

Nestled in a mall in Palm Springs is the original NATIVE FOODS CAFE (est.1994).  They have seven in total in California.  Chef Tanya, of FOOD NETWORK fame, was brought up in a foodie environment, even holidays were cultural food forays (I have parents envy).  Vegan from a young age she dreamed of opening a restaurant using 100% plant based foods.  In 1994 her dream came true.

The place is quite small with indoor and covered outdoor (it gets v.hot down there!) seating.  What blew me away first were the staff.  Oh my God, I was treated royally!  Polite, accommodating, genuinely interested in delivering the best to ensure you leave happy.

I only had time for a dessert once I got there so I ordered the Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake.

Pecan caramel and choccy nibs whipped in a chocolate cookie crust.  The filling is a tofu base and although my preference would have been to have it a little more moist the taste was sensational.  The pecan caramel was generous and rich and the toasted pecans gave a satisfying crunch.  The base…the BASE! yum, bloody yum, rich, dense, chewy and with a kind of bitter/sweet undertone.  I polished it off in seconds and scraped the plate noisily with my fork..and I didn’t care who heard me! I stopped short of grabbing the empty plate and licking it clean, but I remembered just in time I’m a lady (in public!).

I promised to return for dinner that evening but alas my chariot was threatening to turn into a pumpkin, so I had to cross my fingers that one day I get to do Native Foods Part Deux, and sample some more from their long and inventive menu.

Before leaving the chef, Jerry, nice chap who came out to speak to his customers to ensure they were satisfied with their meals, offered to show me their secret tempeh making cupboard.  Made to Chef Tanya’s secret recipe and, looking at reviews online, a winning rendition.  I was thrilled and honored to get a look-see!

Hasta la vista baby! (hopefully)

India Abroad

February 22, 2011 by India Leigh

India Abroad

I keep a budget, a feathery idea, a dollar or pound sign floating in the either.  I live by it when I can, to prolong my travelling lifestyle…. until I’m done.  Unfortunately, this does not allow me to eat out as often as I’d like.  Swanky joints are a rare treat.

A river of curry! Sweet & Spice at Atwater Village

I went to an Indian canteen situated right at the end of my street.  India Sweets & Spices.  Their menu listings go on for reams, the meal combo seems to be the most popular choice.  I opted for a dosa at $5.48  I peered at the glass cabinet for a few moments at the India sweets, before ‘Dosa, Dosa’, sounded out the arrival of my meal.  It was served on a paper thali plate.  My cutlery was plastic.  Lucky for me it is all about the taste.  The spicy potato filling was strangely mashed, the spices subtle.  Duo chutneys, one red one green.  The tamarind was good, the coconut was bitter…almost an ‘off’ taste to it.  I troubled with the latter no more.  The sambhar (the curry gravy) was excellent.  Dense with veggies and with a mother of a kick.  I dallied over each mouthful.  I was stuffed as I scraped the plastic fork into near unreachable corners of my paper plate.  All I left was an ochre stain.
My laden tummy was in no fit state for anymore food..so I ordered the samosa against my better/slimmer judgement.  It was the shape of a teepee.

Taste o vision would be a boon for this pic!

The pastry was crisp, chewy and delicious.  The filling was less so.  Mashed potato and a few lonely peas.  A watery date and tamarind chutney livened it up and I scoffed the lot. A bargain at 99c Whilst eating myself to an uncomfortable state of stuffed I read one of the newspapers, stacked underneath the largest TV I have ever seen.  Statueque, over -made up Indians danced across the screen in formation.  India Abroad.  Flicking through a few things caught my eye.

Eye opening…parents rally for suitors for their ‘talented, rich, successful, handsome,’ children…shouldn’t prove too much of a bother then!
A Jain (vegan Indian) headed for the Deutsche bank?!

So much to explore in this world…I know only a mere scraping from its surface.  I get cross at myself when fear or comfort holds me back from venturing more.  I bless the Internet, its only failing is my lack of imagination.  I curse myself for every moment I let slip by not researching rare chamelions or learning a floor shaking tribal dance.  Kick myself for playing it safe when vast deserts and steamy jungles remain a 1D image in a dusty encylopedia packed away in box somewhere waiting for my return.  I vote for 48 hour days, teleportation, and lottery wins!  Utlised, of course, with a humble respect for the planet and zero carbon footprint.  Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream…

Idyllwild California

January 21, 2011 by India Leigh

Idyllwild California

Idyllwild, is a small mountain town.  A ‘getaway’ place. Extremely friendly with lots of hiking, cabins & retreat centres.  It’s gorgeous.  I came to stay for a few days.

I decided to go to Nature’s Wisdom.  Three years ago they were offering organic raw & vegan entrees.  The menu has changed and the raw has been replaced with meat dishes and only one vegan option…soup.  Not overly succumbing to the rather tatty interior I requested a sample of the soup.  It was a ‘chop it all, chuck it all in’ type veggie broth, that failed to rally my appetite for more.  Especially the cost $8 for a bowl of soup, served in a plastic bowl.  I think not.  Shame.  I said thank you and promptly left.

The next three days I didn’t even consider eating elsewhere after I discovered a small health food store tucked away on the fringe of town MOUNTAIN HARVEST MARKET.  It is not a restaurant but they have a little homemade food section, comfy sofa and tables around a toasty fire and smiles.  My lunch was a ‘to go’ rice based entree of perfectly cooked brown rice, zucchini, kale, red peppers, onions and peas.  It came with a tub of DELICIOUS vegan ‘gravy’.  So satisfying and just the right amount.

I loved this so much I had it two days on the trot.  The last day I had a spicy biryani style dish which was a smidgen away from pulling it off as a dead heat. I was also fortunate to meet lovely Cathy, the woman responsible for the dishes.  She effuses enthusiasm and warmth.  She clearly loves good food and enjoys offering her meals at great prices too.  $4.75 for an entree or salad.Bargain!
The first day I had room for dessert and grabbed a slab of Earth Cafe Pumpkin cake.  Hmm, it had a  strange texture and a weird ‘unnatural’ kind of flavour.  It was not very nice. 4 out of 10. I know they can do better.  ‘Who’s Your Daddy’ used to be a frequent pud rattling around in the bottom of my shopping basket. I’ve not eaten them for a while but I guess the other flavours are still hitting the spot as they netted an award with a vegetarian magazine as Best Raw Goodies, winner. Earth Cafe
